The term “mixed couple” alludes to a form of heterogamy, to an alliance of couples socially different.
It is an evident phenomenon, in actually looking for the “different” partner.
When these differences are motivated, or even interpreted as having more than one origin, things obviously become complicated.
It is a case of differences between social groups, populations, cultural worlds. “Them” and “us”, swallows the mixed couple - single family, at the same time giving a particular form to conflicts and negotiations (on gender models, on relationships with relatives, etc.)
Differences emerge more clearly when there are children. On the other hand, mixed couple, demand more to be recognised and confirmed in particular when there are children. The couple finds itself confronted with models of socialisation and of relations, which cannot be recomposed once and for all. The “trans-cultural work” of a mixed family in a certain sense is never done.
Especially inter-racial marriages mark a breaking down of barriers and of the hierarchy between “races”.
The “differences” are socially stronger and more organised, especially in the religious field. Mixed couple can happen if he/she does not place too much importance on own religion, a weak identification, on the part of both partners, with their own differences.
Those which are mixed due to religion or to nationality (and even more when religion and nationality are combined) also always imply possible conflicts about rules, including juridical ones, and on appropriated authorities or institutions to turn to in case of conflict.

27 August - 30 September 2009
Autonomous stream Hohenwerfen Salzburg
with artists: Ashraf Abbas, Ana Zoe Pop, Elsa Martini, Erwin Maria Hafner, Istvan Balog, Lojze Kalinšek, Patrick Cauvin, Suela Qoshja
This show is dedicated to exploring structures, surfaces, and interfaces in a world that has been transformed to a large extent through art. This transformed art world is highly textured, partly through verbal and non-verbal 'texts' but also by mixtures of human-made and given environments whose complexity offers resistance to symbolic readings. Through these terms, ´Autonomous stream´ aim to bring together transitional figures of thought in art fields. The well-known 'resistance in the materials' and in painting, the emergence of a whole through the patterning of smaller elements, the presentation of an 'all over' composition in a series of canvases, and with regard to the body: the permanent becoming-other of an apparently fixed and bordered identity;
The artists list chosen for this show is meant to be suggestive, not restrictive, of the range of interests we hope to accommodate. As the conscious embrace of constraints - in arts - , can be productive not narrowing, so is our exhibition designed to be generative and to stitch together the diverse Trans-disciplinary approaches.
